CNC PVC

CNC PVC machining is the precision processing of polyvinyl chloride using computer-controlled cutting tools. PVC is a versatile thermoplastic with excellent chemical resistance, good mechanical properties, and low cost. Common grades include Type I, Type II, and CPVC.

PVC machines well with sharp carbide tooling, but can produce gummy chips requiring proper evacuation. Thermal management is needed to prevent melting. FDA-compliant grades are available for food and medical applications. Tolerances are held to ±0.02-0.05mm standard. Applications include plumbing and fittings, chemical processing, electronics, laboratory, and medical.

FAQs
  • What is the difference between Type I and Type II PVC?

Type I is standard PVC with good impact resistance and chemical resistance. Type II has enhanced impact resistance but slightly lower tensile strength.
  • What is CPVC?

CPVC is chlorinated PVC with higher temperature resistance (up to 95°C) and improved chemical resistance. It is used for hot water and chemical applications.
  • What are the machining challenges of PVC?

PVC can produce gummy chips that require proper evacuation. Heat buildup can cause melting. Sharp carbide tooling and appropriate coolant are required. Low thermal conductivity requires careful heat management.
  • Is PVC FDA-compliant?

Yes, FDA-compliant PVC grades are available for food processing, medical devices, and pharmaceutical applications.
  • What industries use CNC PVC machining?

Plumbing and fittings, chemical processing, electronics, laboratory equipment, and medical devices. PVC is specified where chemical resistance and low cost are required.
  • Can PVC be bonded or welded?

Yes, PVC can be solvent-bonded and heat-welded. Solvent bonding is common for pipe fittings and enclosures. Ultrasonic welding is also possible.
