CNC Bronze

CNC bronze machining is the precision processing of bronze alloys using computer-controlled cutting tools. Bronze is a copper-based alloy, typically with tin as the primary alloying element, offering superior wear resistance, high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and good machinability. Common grades include C93200 (bearing bronze), C95400 (aluminum bronze), C63000 (nickel aluminum bronze), and C86300 (manganese bronze).

Bronze provides exceptional bearing properties—low friction, high load capacity, and good thermal conductivity—making it ideal for moving contact applications. It machines well with carbide tooling, though the material is abrasive and requires positive rake geometry. Tolerances are held to ±0.02-0.05mm standard. Applications include bearings, bushings, worm gears, pump impellers, valve seats, and marine hardware.

FAQs
  • What is the most common bronze grade for CNC machining?

C93200 (bearing bronze) is the most common grade for machined components. It offers excellent wear resistance and high load capacity for bearings and bushings. C95400 aluminum bronze is used for high-strength pump and valve applications.
  • How does bronze compare to brass for CNC machining?

Bronze is harder, stronger, and more wear-resistant than brass but less machinable. Brass is preferred for decorative and electrical applications. Bronze is specified for bearing and heavy-load applications.
  • What is the difference between bronze and brass?

Bronze is primarily copper-tin alloy with additional elements. Brass is primarily copper-zinc alloy. Bronze is generally harder, stronger, and more corrosion-resistant than brass.
  • What tolerances can bronze machining achieve?

Standard work holds ±0.02-0.05mm. Precision work holds ±0.01mm. Grinding achieves ±0.005mm for bearing surfaces.
  • What industries use CNC bronze machining?

Industrial equipment bearings, marine components, oil and gas, automotive, and mechanical engineering. Bronze is used where low friction and high wear resistance are required.
  • Can bronze be heat-treated?

Aluminum bronze grades can be heat-treated for increased strength. Bearing bronze grades are typically used in the as-cast or annealed condition.
