We produced a PA12 SLS 3D printed automotive AC vent grille prototype for an interior climate system development program. This functional prototype replicates the production vent design with one-piece black construction, integrating snap-fit mounting clips and movable airflow vanes in a single printed assembly — enabling real-world evaluation of duct integration, assembly fit, and vane adjustability without hard tooling investment.
PA12 (Nylon 12) was selected for its combination of durability, impact resistance, and dimensional stability — making it suitable for functional automotive interior prototypes that require repeated handling, clip engagement cycles, and environmental stability testing.
Design integration included:
- Integrated snap-fit mounting clips — enabling quick installation and removal without separate fasteners, with reinforced clip base geometry to prevent breakage during repeated assembly/disassembly cycles
- Movable airflow vanes — printed with integral pivot features allowing directional adjustment, demonstrating the functional motion capability of the SLS process without secondary assembly
- One-piece housing frame — combining the perimeter frame, vane mounting points, and snap clips into a single printed component, eliminating assembly steps and potential alignment issues
Post-processing included support removal and media blasting for a uniform matte black finish matching automotive interior aesthetics.

Key Technical Highlights
- Integrated Functional Features: SLS enables printing of assembled components with moving parts (vanes) and snap-fit features in a single build — eliminating separate part fabrication and assembly steps. PA12's elongation properties provide the necessary flexibility for clip engagement and vane movement.
- Production-Representative Material: PA12 offers durability and dimensional stability for automotive interior applications, with low moisture absorption ensuring consistent performance across testing environments. The black color matches production interior aesthetics without post-printing painting.
- Rapid Design Iteration: SLS tool-less manufacturing enables fast turnaround for design changes — allowing multiple design iterations to be tested and validated for duct integration and assembly fit before committing to production tooling.
- Assembly Validation Capability: The prototype includes accurate snap clip geometry and mounting features for real-world fitment testing, enabling early detection of interface issues that would be costly to correct in production.
Quality Verification
Dimensional accuracy verified via CMM/caliper measurement. Snap-fit engagement and release force tested for functional reliability. Vane adjustability validated for range of motion. Assembly fit confirmed with mating duct components.
Industry Applications
Ideal for automotive climate system prototypes, interior trim validation, duct integration testing, and functional assembly verification for production-bound designs.
