We produced a black PA12 oscillating clamping link for a micro-automation gripper application using Selective Laser Sintering (SLS). This lightweight linkage component combines a clamping jaw with an integrated pivot joint, requiring fatigue resistance for repeated oscillation cycles and dimensional stability for precise positioning.
PA12 (Nylon 12) was selected for its combination of mechanical strength and functional performance in moving assemblies. Key properties include tensile strength of 46-50 MPa for clamping force transmission, elongation at break of 7-13% for snap-fit and hinge flexibility, heat deflection temperature of 95-115°C for stiffness under elevated temperatures, and low moisture absorption ensuring dimensional stability across environments.
Design integration included an integral hinge/pivot feature eliminating separate pin assembly, snap-fit clamping geometry with 0.5mm+ base radii to prevent stress cracking, and thin-wall lightening sections to reduce mass while maintaining structural integrity.
Post-processing included depowdering followed by black dyeing for uniform appearance and UV protection. The black finish provides better visual concealment and reduces layer line visibility compared to natural nylon parts.
