We produced a PA12 SLS 3D printed integrated hinge assembly for an equipment enclosure application. This one-piece hinge design incorporates both mounting plates and pivot features in a single printed component — with two mounting plates, each featuring two countersunk screw holes for secure attachment to equipment housings, instrument enclosures, or fixture panels, and integrated edge positioning stops that provide locating and alignment guidance during assembly.
PA12 (Nylon 12) was selected for its durability, impact resistance, and dimensional stability — making it suitable for functional hinge applications that require repeated pivot cycles and reliable attachment to mating surfaces. The SLS process enables printing of assembled moving parts in a single build, eliminating separate fabrication and assembly of hinge pins or pivot shafts.
Design integration included:
- Two mounting plates — left and right plates designed for attachment to enclosure/housing surfaces, each with two countersunk screw holes for flush fastener installation
- Integrated pivot joint — printed as a single moving assembly with clearance tolerances optimized for smooth rotation without binding
- Edge positioning stops — integrated limits that provide mechanical stop positions for consistent opening angles and alignment guidance during installation
- Countersunk screw holes — designed with countersink features for flat-head fastener seating, ensuring flush surface mating when attached to panels
Post-processing included support removal and media blasting for a uniform matte black finish.
