We manufactured a precision 304 stainless steel knurled micro-adjustment handle shaft for a medical equipment calibration module application. This component serves as a manual adjustment interface — requiring a tactile diamond knurl pattern on the cylindrical gripping section, precise coaxiality between the square drive shaft and cylindrical body, accurate flat mounting hole positioning, and clean knurl root geometry without steps or burrs. 304 stainless steel was selected for its corrosion resistance and biocompatibility in medical environments . The knurl pattern provides secure grip for fine manual adjustments — a common requirement in medical device ergonomics .
We applied single-setup turn-mill machining to complete cylindrical turning, knurling, square shaft milling, and mounting hole drilling in one clamping — eliminating re-fixturing errors and maintaining TIR. Diamond knurl pattern was formed using a knurling tool with controlled pressure to ensure uniform depth and spacing without edge chipping . The square shaft-to-cylinder concentricity was maintained through single-setup referencing. Mounting hole position accuracy was achieved with precision indexing. After machining, the shaft underwent passivation treatment (ASTM A967) to remove free iron and enhance corrosion resistance , followed by precision cylindrical grinding of critical bearing surfaces.

| Key Metric | Specification |
| Knurl Pattern | Diamond knurl — uniform depth, no edge chipping |
| Square-to-Cylinder Coaxiality | ≤0.01mm TIR (square shaft to cylindrical body) |
| Mounting Hole Positional Tolerance | ±0.02mm (flat mounting hole array) |
| Knurl Root Condition | No steps, no burrs — clean transition |
| Surface Treatment | Passivation (ASTM A967) + precision grinding |
| Material | Stainless steel 304 |
| Machining Process | CNC turn-mill (single-setup) + passivation + grinding |
CMM inspection verified square-to-cylinder TIR (≤0.01mm), mounting hole positional accuracy (±0.02mm), and overall dimensional tolerances. Knurl pattern inspected for uniformity, depth consistency, and edge condition. Surface roughness verified on ground bearing surfaces. Passivation effectiveness confirmed per ASTM A967 specifications.
Ideal for medical calibration module adjustment handles, surgical instrument adjustment shafts, precision optical adjustment mechanisms, and diagnostic equipment control interfaces.
