We manufactured a precision single-use cranial drill bit combining 420 medical stainless steel and POM for a neurosurgical consumables application. This critical surgical tool serves as a bone milling/drilling attachment for craniotomy procedures — requiring precise multi-edge cutting geometry, a step anti-drill stop structure to prevent over-penetration, burr-free cutting edges, and reliable coaxial alignment between the stainless steel cutting head and the POM depth-limiting component.
420 martensitic stainless steel was selected for the cutting head due to its high strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance when heat-treated — making it a standard material for surgical and dental instruments . POM was chosen for the depth-stop component for its biocompatibility, low friction, and ability to withstand repeated steam sterilization (up to 135°C) without degradation .
The manufacturing approach was divided into three stages: Precision machining of the 420 steel cutting head, CNC milling of the POM depth-stop component, and precision assembly with coaxiality verification. For the steel component, we applied controlled grinding and milling parameters to maintain multi-edge cutting profile accuracy while ensuring burr-free edges. The step anti-drill stop structure wAs Machined with tight tolerances to ensure consistent depth limitation during surgical use. The POM component was machined with sharp tooling and optimized cooling to prevent heat-induced deformation and maintain dimensional stability . Metal and plastic components were assembled with coaxial alignment verification using precision fixturing. The complete drill bit was then mirror-polished to achieve the required surface finish for medical applications, followed by passivation to enhance corrosion resistance . The assembly meets medical device sterilization compatibility standards for single-use neurosurgical consumables .
