The surface finish applied to CNC-machined parts affects corrosion resistance, wear properties, appearance, and functional performance. Available finishes are selected based on material type and application requirements.
Anodizing (Aluminum)
Anodizing converts the aluminum surface into a durable, corrosion-resistant oxide layer. Type II anodizing provides general protection with clear or colored finishes. Type III hard anodizing provides enhanced wear resistance for moving contact surfaces. Chromic acid anodizing is specified for aerospace structural parts requiring minimal fatigue impact.
Chemical Conversion Coating
Chemical conversion coatings (Alodine, Iridite) produce a thin, conductive oxide layer for aluminum parts. This finish preserves electrical conductivity and provides moderate corrosion protection. It is frequently specified for electronic applications and as a base for painting or adhesive bonding.
Powder Coating
Powder coating applies a dry polymer layer cured to a durable, decorative finish. Available in a wide range of colors and textures, it provides excellent corrosion resistance for exterior and high-contact applications. Suitable for both aluminum and steel parts.
Plating
Electroless nickel plating deposits a uniform nickel-phosphorus coating with hardness and wear resistance. Zinc plating provides basic corrosion protection for steel parts. Passivation removes surface contamination from stainless steel parts and restores corrosion resistance.
Mechanical Finishes
Bead blasting produces a uniform matte texture, removing tool marks and preparing surfaces for coating. Brushing creates directional grain patterns for decorative applications. Polishing produces reflective surfaces for aesthetic or functional requirements. Tumbling deburrs and radiuses edges on large quantities of parts.
Other Finishes
Black oxide provides mild corrosion resistance with a dark appearance for steel parts. PTFE coatings reduce friction for sliding applications. Electropolishing removes material from stainless steel for improved surface finish and corrosion resistance.
