We manufactured a precision 7075 aluminum robot control center housing with black anodized finish for a robotics application. 7075-T6 aluminum offers tensile strength up to 572 MPa — significantly higher than 6061 — making it suitable for robotic structural components that experience dynamic loads . However, this strength comes with trade-offs: 7075 is more challenging to machine due to its hardness and tendency to work-harden, and its alloy composition can affect anodizing results. Studies show that 7075's relatively high Fe content can lead to coarse crystalline phases that, during anodizing pretreatment (acid/alkaline cleaning), create surface pits — potentially forming black lines on the anodized surface, particularly in material center sections [citation:2][citation:5]. For this control housing, we addressed these challenges through: controlled machining parameters — moderate speeds and feeds to prevent work hardening and tool wear, stress-relief sequencing to manage residual stresses from the 7075-T6 temper, and anodizing process optimization with thorough surface preparation to minimize defect formation [citation:5]. Black Anodizing (Type II) was applied as specified for robotic controller housings — providing corrosion resistance and professional appearance [citation:1]. The result: a control housing meeting robotics application requirements for structural integrity and surface finish.
