We manufactured a precision 6061 split-type handheld device aluminum enclosure for a medical instrument application. This two-piece clamshell housing consists of upper and lower half-shells that mate precisely to form the instrument body — requiring tight fit control between mating surfaces, accurate alignment of internal mounting features, and a consistent cosmetic finish. The "clamshell" or "split-handle" design is a common approach in medical handheld devices, balancing functional access with a clean sealed appearance.
Medical-grade aluminum enclosures like this one typically use 6061 alloy for its excellent machinability, corrosion resistance, and ability to achieve a uniform anodized finish. Research indicates that Type II anodizing of aluminum for medical housings strengthens corrosion resistance and minimizes biological reactivity while maintaining electrical performance. Each half-shell wAs Machined from 6061 billet, with mating surfaces held to precise tolerances to ensure flush assembly without gaps. The enclosures then underwent bead-blasting to create a uniform matte texture, followed by blue anodizing (MIL-A-8625 Type II) for a consistent cosmetic appearance and enhanced surface protection for medical environments.
| Project Name | 6061 Split Handheld Enclosure |
| Key Metric | Specification |
| Dimensional Tolerance | ±0.02mm (critical mating and mounting features) |
| Mating Surface Fit | Flush assembly — no gaps between half-shells |
| Material | Aluminum 6061-T6 |
| Surface Treatment | Bead-blasted + blue anodizing (Type II, MIL-A-8625) |
| Surface Roughness | Uniform matte finish post-bead-blasting |
| Machining Process | Turn-mill + CNC milling |
CMM inspection verified dimensional accuracy and mating surface alignment between half-shells. Visual inspection confirmed uniform bead-blasted texture and consistent blue anodized color across both shells. Assembly test verified flush mating with no gaps.
Ideal for handheld medical instruments, portable diagnostic devices, patient monitoring units, and therapeutic equipment housings requiring split-body enclosures.
