We manufactured a precision 6061 aluminum integrated support column bracket serving as a gimbal base for precision positioning applications. This one-piece milled component integrates the column support structure and mounting base into a single monolithic form — eliminating assembly joints and the associated alignment errors. 6061-T6 Aluminum was selected for its excellent machinability, good corrosion resistance, and moderate strength (tensile 124-290 MPa) suitable for structural support applications . The machining challenge: one-piece milling of tall column features with thin-wall sections creates susceptibility to stress-induced distortion during material removal, as 6061 retains internal stresses from heat treatment that can release unevenly during processing . We implemented staged roughing with intermediate stress-relief pauses — allowing residual stresses to dissipate before final finishing — combined with low-stress fixturing to maintain geometric stability throughout the milling process. The result: a one-piece support column bracket holding dimensional accuracy without post-machining warpage.
